The summer holiday season is now officially upon us and that means that most of us have a break from work booked into the calendar at some point. It can be easy to forget that whilst we are away enjoying some much-needed relaxation time, our co-workers are still at the office, working away.The summer holiday season is now officially upon us and that means that most of us have a break from work booked into the calendar at some point. It can be easy to forget that whilst we are away enjoying some much-needed relaxation time, our co-workers are still at the office, working away.
Our offices are shared spaces and remembering to make sure that your desk is neat, tidy and clean whilst you are away is a friendly and courteous thing to do and it means that when you return, you can hit the ground running and catch up quickly.To help you, we have put together our pre-holiday desk checklist!
1. Empty that Bin! There is nothing worse, especially as the temperature rises than a dirty bin that stinks of rotting food and banana skins! If you don’t have a cleaning service that will do this for you, making sure that you empty your desk bin before you clock off for a week is vital!
2. Tidy up papers! Anything confidential needs to be locked away as we are sure you know, but it might be a good idea to stack your work in piles of importance so that when you come back, you can see quickly what needs to be addressed first. Tell your colleagues, so that they can add to your piles as well if needed or will be able to see what they can help you get done. Neat piles will also help your office cleaner to keep your surfaces dust free.
3. Take your mug to the kitchen! We all have a mug on our desk (some of us have more than one!) and sweet tea and coffee residue can be a perfect place for flies to grab a sugar hit or for bacteria to breed and cause mould. Pop your mug in the kitchen before you leave so you don’t have a fluffy mess to deal with on your first day back; you’re going to need that coffee!
4. Give your phone a wipe! Our phones are the worst culprit when it comes to harbouring germs; just think how close they are to your mouth all day. Giving the receiver a good clean with an alcohol wipe will ensure that any germs you have left on it won’t be able to multiply whilst you are away.
If your office has a regular cleaning service, then some of the above will be being done on a regular basis, however, giving our list above a go before you go on your holidays is also a nice way to get your head into ‘holiday mode’ and to show that you are a considerate team member.
